1
Q

What is LASER?

A

light amplification of stimulated emissions of radiation

-Light indiced photochemical reactions-> radiation energy that behaves like a particle and wave

Q

Hot vs. Cold PT Lasers

A

Hot:
high power=thermal effect
used for medicine cutting, coag, and surgery

Cold: Used in PT
Power ,50mW for photochemical effect
used for tissue healing

Q

3 Laser Effects on Cells

A
  1. Nitric oxide bingding to chytochrome C
    - prohibits oxygen binding/healing
    - laser forces release of nitrous oxide
    - oxy can then mind to mitochondria for normal oxidative phosphorylation
  2. Vasodilation
    - nitrous oxide in system after release causes vasodilation
    - helps dissipate bad byproducts
  3. Reactive oxygenation species
    - enhances and stimulates DNA/RNA synthesis
    - enhances cell reproduction and healing

Q

4 Physiologic Effects of Laser

A
  1. Edema Reduction
    - decrease inflam via decrease prostaglandin synth
    - increase vessel diameter
    - stimulates vessel motoricity via stim of vascular/lymphatic endothelial cells
    - encourages angiogenesis
  2. Decrease infection risk
    - increase phagocytosis
    - eliminates stagnant tissue
  3. Wound Healing
    - stimultes fibroblasts, macrophages, endothelial cells, and lymphocytes
    - physiologic stress/pathologic conditions in vivo or vitro
    - increase vascularization
  4. Reduce scar adhesions/fibrous scar tissue
    - increase epithelization

Q

Laser Paramters

A

Depth: up to 5 cm Laser; SLD up to 2.5 cm; LED 0.5cm

Energy Density: (J/cm2)
determined by power, exposure time, and beam aperature area
-Low ranges best benefit
