Laryngeal Anatomy Flashcards
What are the borders of the larynx?
superior - hyoid bone
inferior - trachea
posterior - pharynx
List out the cartilage of the larynx
single
epliglottis
thyroid
cricoid
paired
arytenoid
corniculate
cuneiform
what kind of cartilage is in the larynx?
hyaline cartilage
give me three properties of hyaline cartilage
- large amt of collagen
- poor blood supply
- !!! gets calcified with age
what attaches the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone?
the thyrohyoid membrane
What are the landmark features of the thyroid cartilage?
superior cornu
lamina
laryngeal prominence (adams apple)
thyroid notch
thyroid angle
inferior cornu
how is the epiglottis attached to the thyroid?
via the thyroepiglottic ligament
how is the epiglottis attached to the hyoid?
via the hyoepligottic ligament
what are the two main features of the epiglottis?
the lingual and laryngeal surface
what structure attaches the cricoid to the thyroid?
the median cricothyroid ligament
what structure attaches the cricoid cartilage to the trachea?
the cricotracheal membrance
two main features of the cricoid?
cricoid arch (anterior)
cricoid lamina (posterior)
what ligament assists cricoid-thyroid movement?
the anterior and posterior cricothyroid ligaments
where do the cuneiform cartilages sit?
on the aryepiglottic folds
what two joints are located on the cricoid?
the cricothyroid joint (clicks on bottom)
the cricoarytenoid joint (clicks on top)
Provide three characteristics of vocal folds when adducted
- protects airway
- expends energy
- allows speech production
what is the region called that forms the collar-lining of the larynx?
the laryngeal aditus
what are the major spaces of larynx, from superior to inferior?
larygneal vestibule
and laryngeal ventricle
(and glottis)
what are the two types of glottis around arytenoid and thyroid cartilages?
(and their percentages)
cartilaginous glottis (40%)
membranous glottis (60%)
What nerve supplies the larynx?
cranial nerve x (vagus)
What are the two nerve branches that supply the larynx?
the superior laryngeal nerve
and recurrent laryngeal nerve
What are the two subdivisions of superior laryngeal nerve and function?
internal = sensory (base of tongue to vocal folds)
external = motor (JUST cricothyroid muscle)
what are the two main functions of the recurrent laryngeal nerve?
motor (ALL intrinsic muscles EXCEPT cricothyroid)
sensory (vocal folds and below)
what structure does the RIGHT recurrent nerve initially hook under?
the right subclavian artery
what structure does the LEFT recurrent nerve initially hook under
the aortic arch
What are the major intrinsic muscles of the larynx?
thyroarytenoid muscles
LAT cricoarytenoid muscles
interarytenoid muscles (oblique+transverse)
POST cricoarytenoid muscles
cricothyroid muscles
What are the main functions of the thyroarytenoid muscles?
- increases tension (w/o changing its length)
- shortens the vocal folds
- adducts the vocal folds
