Large Intestines Flashcards
what is the main function of the large intestines
fluid absorption
what are the 3 parts of the large intestine
1 - caecum - appendix joined to this
2 - colon - ascending, transverse, desscending and sigmoid region
3 - rectum - followed by anal canal
hepatic flexure
bend of large intestines at liver (between ascending and transverse parts )
splenic flexure
bend of large intestines at spleen (between transverse and descending parts)
taenia coli
band of longitudnal muscle found on the large intestines (except rectum)
appendicies epiploicae
fatty tags around taenia coli
haustra(e)
pouches of colon in large intestine
what are the two sphincters in the anal canal
internal sphincter - smooth muscle , involuntary
external sphincter - skeletal muscle, voluntary
ileo-caecal valve
fold of mucosa that allows chyme to pass from S.I to L.I but not vice versa
what does overabsorption and failure to reabsorb in the colon result in
overabsorption - constipation
failure - diarrohea
peristalsis in large intestine
happens frequently, moves fecal matter towards rectum
mass movements in large intestine
infrequent, prolonged peristalsis contraction, breaks big things down and rapidly moves them from transverse colon to rectum
ileostomy, colonostomy
either ileum or colon brought to skin surface via opening called stoma. Faeces is collected in a bag that needs changed regularly
