large intestine Flashcards
What is the function of the ileocecal valve in the Large Intestine?
The Ileocecal valve regulates what enters the large intestine from the small intestine
What is the Cecum in the large intestine?
A small pouch located in the Large intestine that absoprbs fluids and salts that are remaining after SI absorption. It mixes remains with mucus
What is connected to the Cecum thats function is largely unknown but it is thought to harbor some bacteria for the LI function?
The Appendix
Rectum
the last portion of the LI that terminates to the Anus.
Regulates excretion of waste from LI
How much of our digestion occurs in the Large intestine? (think %)
5% of digestion occurs in the LI
Main functions of LI
-absorb/reabsorb water from undigestied materal and excrete final waste
LI and H20;
-how much h20 does it recieve a day? and how much of it is from food and how much from gut?
-what ions gets absorbed with h20 in LI?
-what ion gets excreted into the LI in order to REDUCE acidity?
-what vitamin does the LI absorb?
-The LI recieves 10L of h20 a day. 1.5 is from food and 8.5 is from the gut
-Na+ and Cl- get absorbed with h20 in LI
-HCO3- gets excreted into LI to reduce acidity
-LI absorbs vitamin K (produced by colon bacteria)
What happens if water is not absorbed well?
Diarrhea can occur
What is Feces composed of?
75% H20 and 25% solids
1/3 intestinal bacteria
2/3 undigested materials
