Lapse rates Flashcards
What is environmental lapse rate?
Rate at which the air cools is about 6.5degrees every 1000meters
What happens to temps as altitude increases?
As altitude increases because of gravity, the air closer to sea level has more particles in it. At higher altitudes there are less particles
What is adiabatic cooling?
At higher altitudes the pressure on the parcel of air is less, so the parcel of air can expand. As the air expands the heat in the particles has to heat a bigger area
What is DALR (dry adiabatic lapse rate) ?
A parcel of air that is not 100% relative humidity, it will cool at 9.8degrees per 1000meters.
What is SALR (saturated adiabatic lapse rate)
If parcel of air that have reached relative humidity, it will cool at 5.5degrees
