An adverb that is used to describe a verb eg. He walked slowly
Adjective
A word that is used to describe something or someone
Alliteratiom
Words in a sentence put together that begin with the same sound
Onomatopoeia
A word that is used that sounds like the sound
Personofication
Giving an inanimate object human characteristics
Modal verb
A verb that is used that expresses possibility eg. Might, could, can
Common noun
A noun that denotes an object
Proper noun
A place, name or organisation
Personal Pronoun
A word that refers ro a specific person or thing eg she, he, them
Abstract noun
A noun depicting a non physical idea or experience eg. Relationship, friendship
Concrete noun
The experience of something through your five senses
Collective noun
A noun that denotes a group of individuals eg. Army, Hurd
Pathetic fallacy
When weather depicts the mood for a specific scene etc
Foreboding
Implying that something bad is going to happen
Dramatic irony
Irony that is picked up by an audience but not the characters in the play film, book etc
Foreshadowing
Hinting that something is going to happen in the future
Fronted adverbial
A word or phrase that has been placed at the beginning of the sentence used to describe the action that follows. eg. Strangely, slowly he walked.
Colloquial
Informal/slang
Oxymoron
When two things contradict each other eg. They played terrible and won
Hyperbole
Deliberate exaggeration
Sarcasm
When the opposite is meant of what is said
Rhetorical question
A question that does not require an answer
Narrative focus
The writer focuses in on a specific (often small details) section of the text
Wider focus
Often deals with bigger details/setting/more characters etc
Switch focus
When the writer changes their focus from one character to another one setting to another, what a character is thinking to what a character is doing et pc
Cyclical structure
Where a story ends in a similar way to how it begins thus could be through the setting the action the characters language choice atmosphere etc
Climax
The most exciting part of the story
Anticlimax
When a part of the story is not as exciting as you hoped
Rising action
Where the tension/action is building towards a climax
Falling action
When the atmosphere starts to fall away this can often come after a climax or anticlimax
Motif
pattern or recurring idea in an artistic work
Symbolism
The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
Slang
Informal words used mostly in speech within a particular social group
Jargon
Specialist language not understood by others
Narrative writing
narrative or story is a report of connected events, real or imaginary, presented in a sequence of written or spoken words
Descriptive writing
Descriptive writing is the clear description of people, places, objects, or events using appropriate details.
