What is question 2 asking you to write about?
Explain and analyse how different writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers using relevant subject terminology to support.
What are the types of sentence structure?
Simple
Compound
Complex
Compound Complex
What is a simple sentence?
A sentence consisting of only one clause and only one subject.
What is a compound sentence?
A sentence with more than one subject or predicate.
What is a complex sentence?
A sentence containing a subordinate clause or clauses.
What is a compound complex sentence?
A sentence containing at least two independent clauses and at least on dependant clause.
What should you include in your answer when answering question 2?

Why might a writer use a long sentence?
To create a dreary, depressing, overwhelming or monotonous atmosphere.
Why might a writer use simple sentences?
To create a sense of energy, pace and panic.
How do sentences create their particular effect?
Long sentences take lots of time to read so seemingly are ongoing.
Short sentences create a sense of pace and panic as you require quick intakes of breath to emphasise the punctuation (full stops)
What is an analogy?
Comparing one idea to another so that is it easier to understand.
What is the effect of personification?
Makes a description more vivid and helps to give the sense of the writers viewpoint or attitude.
What is the effect of alliteration?
Alliteration is used to grab the readers attention and emphasise key points to make them more memorable.
What is the effect on onomatopoeia?
They make descriptions more powerful as it appeals to the readers sense of hearing helping them imagine what the writer is describing.
What is the effect of irony?
To express the writers viewpoint however it also helps to make what they’re saying light hearted or humorous.
