What are donotations and connotations?
connotations are ideas words link to
denotation the dictionary meaning
What should you look for in prose fiction?
- literary techniques
- e.g. metaphor
- other language techniques
- such as emotive language or hyperbole
- connotations of words
- language choices within dialogue
- e.g. how dialect can be used to reveal more about a character
- word types
What is a motif?
recurring element or sybol in a text
the repition of which contributes to establishing a theme
What are the effects of figurative language?
- writers makes their descriptions more creative and interesting
- create a more powerful image
- although metaphors create a stronger than simile, as it describes the subject as it were something else
What is an analogy?
compares one idea to another to make it easier to understand
why may analogies may be used?
provide powerful and memorable images
can be more familiar or shockling than the original
makes it easier for the reader to grasp the point

gives the sense of the viewpoint or attitude fo th writer or a character
What is the effect of onomatopoeia?
makes descriptions more powerful
appeals to the readers sense of hearing, which helps them imagine what the writer is describing
What is irony and what is the effect of it?
irony is when the literal meaning of a piece of writing is the exact opposiute of its intended meaning
can relate to context
makes what they’re saying appear humorous or light-hearted
What is the effect of sarcasm?
- mocking or scornful tone
- intended to insult someone or make fun of them
- or to show that the writer is angry or annoyed
- sarcastic writing usually uses irony - but the tone is more aggressive and unpleasant
What is descriptive language?
- writers use techniques and vocabularly so that the reader gets a really clear image in their mind of what the writer’s describing
- it makes the text more interesting, dramatic or convincing
- use senses, figurative language, verbs, and adjectives
