- they are responsive to changes in tone of voice and to sounds other than speech

- discovers the fun of games
- looks at your face when they hear their name
- recognise the names of familiar objects

- points at pictures in a book when you name them
- can point to body parts when asked
- can understand simple commands
- likes listening to simple story’s and songs

2-3 years
A
- toddlers will understand 2 stage commands
- will understand meanings ( e.g hot or cold )
- notices sounds like tv or phone and may become exited

3-4 years
A
- understand the words ‘ who’, ‘what’ and ‘ where’
- can hear you when you call from another room
- hearing difficulties may become evident

4-5 years
A
- can answer simple questions about stories etc
- understands nearly everything that is said
