Language delay Flashcards
norms for comprehension of single words
10m: 0-144 words
16m: 80-300 words
norms for production of single words
12m: 0-24 words
24m: 89-534
norm age for production of 2 word combinations
between 16 and 24 months
A child is not achieving norms in S&L, why is this difficult at this age?
They might resolve themselves, but they might be a sign of a language disorder which means intervention would be needed
Name some risk factors for having a language delay/disorder
Genetic/chromosomal syndromes such as DS
Family history of SLC difficulties
Prematurity/low birth weight
Hearing/visual impairments
Social disadvantage/neglect
Describe a language delay
A child that follows typical rate and progress of S&L development but it is slower than expected. There is no obvious reason for this (no medical factors like a learning disability). They are expected to catch up.
There are some factors that might explain it such as having a mild fluctuating hearing loss.
how many 3 year olds have a language delay
10%
What is the critical age hypothesis
If language difficulties are still present at 5 years (brain maturation occurs at this age) then they are less likely to resolve
Why is it important to differentiate between a delay and a disorder
a delay in acquiring first words and phrase level language is a common sign of developmental disorders e.g. ASD, LD - these might need further intervention
