How does a child gain cultural capital
being exposed to different cultures in the home (through books, family etc) or through holidays
What are the three different types of social capital
Bonding
Bridging
Linking
describe bonding
relationships between similar people (alike in terms if sociodemographic/economic characteristics)
describe bridging
dissimilar people who are at the same hierarchy
describe linking
relationships between people across hierarchy - the ability to network through friends
describe how language socialisation is socially defined
in the West it is believed that infant direct conversation between mothers&babies is the best way to build language
But mothers in other cultures do not regularly speak directly to babies and these children still reach the linguistic milestones at a similar rate - children in these contexts learn from attending to others’ interactions
Describe the hart and risley study
1995 - studies the expressive language of 43 mothers and child from various SES backgrounds
Every month for 2.5 years each family was observed for one hour
There was found to be a 30 million word gap between families from low SES compared to high SES.
but only words spoken directly to the infants were coned as well as only standardised words
What did Sperry, Sperry and Miller find
they re-examined the study by replicating it but made some differences
they got to know the families and counted overheard words
they concluded there is no word gap when including multiple caregivers and overheard talk
