Did a study in New York - Sacks, Macys, Kleins.
Sales assistant from sacks - upper class - used the r more, high prestige.
The sales assistant from kleins used it the lease - lower class - low prestige.
What else did Labov find?
Sacks - As class of store increased, the pronunciation of r increased.
Macy’s - r increased in careful speech. And they changed their accent from middle class to upper class more.
