Occupational sociolect
Distinctive language used by particular occupational groups.
Found in spoken and written forms.
Criticisms of occupational sociolect
Can be see as elitist (excludes those who don’t understand).
Advantages of occupational sociolect
- Develops to fit the groups specific purposes.
- Specialists in a job use it to communicate quickly and precisely with other specialists in the same job. You wouldn’t necessarily expect non-specialists to understand it.

Often the order can be similar for specific discourses and are separated distinctly by discourse markers - e.g scientific reports follow a specific structure: title, intro, method, findings, conclusion, evaluation.
