What are pragmatics?
A
Relates to the intended rather than the literal meaning

What is figurative language?
A
Language that is not meant to be taken literally

What is the Standard Pragmatic model (Grice, 1975)?
A
- The literal meaning is assessed
- The reader or listener decides whether it makes sense to the context
- If it doesn’t, they search for a nonliteral meaning of the sentence that does make sense in the context

What is metaphor interference effect?
A
It takes longer to decide whether the literal meaning of metaphors is false

What is the Predication model (Kintsch, 2000)?
A
It has two components:
Latent semantics analysis component - word meanings based on their relations with other words.
Construction-integration component - information from the above component is used to construct interpretations.
