Landscapes - Landscape Ecology Flashcards
Describe ecological functions at the landscape level
Ex. Hydrology - the movement of water throughout a landscape
How do landscapes change over time?
Landscapes are nested and in constant flux, so patterns of various scales affect each other
What are some of the tools used in landscape ecology?
Arial photography, remote sensing, and GIS
Landscape
The spatial arrangement of habitats at different scales
Landscape ecology
The field of study that considers the spatial arrangement of habitats at different scales and examines how they influence all levels of ecology - from individuals to ecosystems
How do the shape of landscapes affect organisms’ processes?
Edge effects - some organisms require definite habitats, others need transition habitats, can also effect the spread of diseases
Movement between landscapes is affected by shape and connectivity
Landscape structure
Spatial elements generated by factors (e.g., geology, geomorphology, disturbance)
Landscape elements
Spatially interrelated components of vegetation & other physical features (e.g., streams)
Patch
A relatively homogeneous area that differs from its surroundings
Transition types
Edges: abrupt
Ecotones: gradual
Corridor
Linear feature that differs from habitats on either side - connects patches
Network
Interconnected patches
Mosaic
Integrated complex of patches, corridors, and networks
Ecological functions: Hydrology
How vegetation, drainage, and runoff affects the movement of water through a landscape
