Reflex: babinski
Dorsiflexion of the big toe and fanning of the other toes;
sign of UMN lesion, but normal reflex in 1st year of life
How to remember reflex
Reflexes count up in order S1,2 L3,4 C5,6 C7,8
Primitive reflex: definition
CNS reflexes that are present in healthy infants, but absent in neurologically intact adults.
Normally disappear in the 1st year of life.
These primitive reflexes are inhibited by a mature/developing frontal lobe.
They may re-emerge in adults following frontal lobe lesions–loss of inhibition of these reflexes
Primitive reflex: moro reflex
Hanging on for life
Abduct/extend limbs when startled and then draw together.
Primitive reflex: rooting reflex
Movement of head toward one side if cheek or mouth is stroked “nipple seeking”
Primitive reflex: sucking reflex
Sucking response when root of mouth is touched
Primitive reflex: palmar reflex
Curling of fingers if palm is stroked
Primitive reflex: plantar reflex
Dorsiflexion of large toe and fanning of the other with platar stimulation
Primitive reflex: galant reflex
Stroking alone one side of the spine while newborn is in ventral suspension (face down) causes lateral flexion of lower body toward stimulated side.
