Landing Gear Flashcards
What is the purpose of landing gear?
Supports the aircraft for takeoffs, landing, and taxi
Why tail wheel landing gear?
Superior on rough terrain and still preferred by bush pilots
Where is the main gear located on a tail wheel aircraft?
Forward of the center of gravity
Down side of tail wheel landing gear?
Less stable during landing and takeoff and susceptible to ground loops.
Why tricycle landing gear?
Makes taxing, taking off, and landing a lot easier because of greater directional stability and visibility
How is steering done on a small aircraft?
Usually done by the rudder pedals
How are swiveling nose wheel steered?
By differential braking
Purpose of shock struts
Absorb landing and taxi loads
How do shock struts work?
By converting landing load to heat by forcing hydraulic fluid through a metering orifice.
Major shock absorbing parts
Outer cylinder
Inner cylinder or piston
Tapered metering rod
Orifice (for metering rod)
How are shock struts attached to the aircraft?
Trunnion or some kind of brackets
Two chambers of OLEO shock
Upper chamber-mostly air or dry nitrogen
Lower inside the bottom piston if filled with hydraulic fluid, often 5606
What are torque links?
-Connects the upper cylinder to the lower cylinder
-Keeps the lower piston from turning
-Limits the amount of extension for the lower piston
-Used for main gear alignment and nose wheel steering
What is a snubber tube?
To bleed returning oil back into the lower piston
So the landing gear does not slam down
How is the landing impact absorbed?
Mostly by oil, oil transfers from the lower chamber to the upper through the orifice
