Landing Flashcards
Barrier height
50ft
Speed at barrier height
VREF
Relationship between l/d distance and l/d speed
5% increase in l/d speed = 10% increase in l/d distance
VREF for a class B
Can’t be less than VMCL
Or
1.3 x Vso
VREF for a class A
Can’t be less than VMCL
Or
1.23 x Vsro
Greatest effect on stopping the a/c
Wheel brakes
Anti skid
Abs for a/c
If an a/c has this then l/d distance will be shorter
What will increase l/d distance
Wet, contamination, downslope, high alt, high temp, grass r/y
Problems with reverse thrust
Decreases engine life
Picks up dirt from the ground and shoots it fwd - not a problem at high speed but low speed it could go into the engine
Effect of high alt
As KE = 1/2mv2
For the same CAS l/d distance will be longer than at MSL as the V2 will be larger - take longer to slow down
In planning, what to take into account for headwind and tailwind
Plan for 50% of headwind component
Plan for 150% of tailwind component
The effect of downslope r/y
Up to 2% downslope - anymore - need authority permission
For class B - 5% extra distance for every 1% of downslope
For class A - do not consider slope within 2%
Effect of wet
1.15 factor increase
Wet grass = 1.15x1.15 = 1.32
LDA safety factors
Prop = 70% LDA (1.43)
Jet = 60% LDA (1.67)
LD needs to be greater than or equal to LDA
