Landforms of Erosion Flashcards
Cliffs and Wavecut platform
Over time cliffs retreat due to waves and weathering.
They cause a notch at the high water mark, develops into a cave.
Rock above becomes unstable, eventually collapses.
What is a wave-cut platform
a flat surface left behind when a cliff is eroded.
Headlands and Bays
Form where there are bands of alternating hard rock and soft rock at right angles to the shoreline.
Soft rock erodes quickly, forming a bay.
Hard rocks erodes slowly and sticks out as a headland.
Caves, Blow holes, arches and stacks
1) weak areas in rock are eroded
2) Roof is weakened along major joint by hydraulic pressure, roof collapses.
3) Caves on either side may join up to form an arch.
4) Arch collapses to form a stack.
