Landforms Of Coastal Erosion: Sea Cliffs Flashcards
What is a sea cliff?
It’s a vertical or steep slope on the coastline.
How can you find them on OS maps?
Contour lines on the coast are very close together
What is a notch?
The waves erode a notch at the line of weakness on the coastline between the high-water mark and the low-cut mark.
What makes a notch grow larger over time?
Hydraulic action
What is an overhang?
The rock above the overhang that eventually collapses due to not having any support?
How is the cliff formed?
As the sea erodes further the rock it erodes gets higher
What processes of coastal erosion makes a cliff retreat into the coastline?
Compression and abrasion which constantly erodes the cliff
What is a wave-cut platform?
The rock that is left at the former base of the cliff.
What is a wave-built terrace?
Material is eroded from the new cliff face is then deposited on top of this platform to form it.
