Coastal Protection: Groynes Flashcards
1
Q
What are groynes?
A
They are concrete or wooden structures built at right angles to the coastline. They extend down the shore and into the sea.
2
Q
What do they do?
A
They trap sediment carried by LSD. This ensures that sand builds up on the beach rather than be removed from it.
3
Q
What negative impacts do groynes have?
A
If the sand is trapped in one place, it means that further down the coastline there is nothing to deposit, and the waves have more power to erode.
4
Q
What is an example of groynes?
A
Rosslare Strand in Co. Kerry
