Landforms caused by Deposition Flashcards
List 4 landforms in the river caused by deposition!
- Meanders
- Floodpain and Levees formation
- Estuary (lower course)
- Delta (lower course)
What is meanders?
Course of river approaches, flows over flatter land. Lateral erosion dominates, river swings in large bend and forming meanders. Meanders changes position over time, forming Ox bow lake, than Ox bow Scar
What’s floodpain and levees?
When the river floods, it deposits the heaviest particles, larger particles forms levees, smaller particles forms floodpain.
What’s Estuary and how do they form?
Area of the river where fresh river water mixes with salt sea water. Mix point changes with the tide as sea water pushes up the river mouth with tidal movement.
How do delta form?
Delta forms when river approaches the mouth, deposition occurs as velocity slows. Deposition fills up the river mouth, the channel begins to split into distributaries.
What is Discharge of River?
Amount of water that passes the river each second!
What units is discharge of river measured in?
cumecs (cubic metres per second)
How to calculate lag time?
Peak discharge time minus peak rainfall time.
In relations to flooding
A shorter lag time..
More flooding!
