process that occurs along the river! Flashcards
What is Weathering?
Break down of rocks by actions of weather.
What is Freeze-thaw weathering
It is a type of weathering. Precipitation gets into cracks in the rock, freezing temperature, the ice expands and breaks apart. It is repeated.
What is Erosion?
Wearing away of rocks by movement of water and glaciers.
List 4 types of erosion!
- Hydraulic Power
- Abrasion
- Attrition
- Corrosion
What’s hydraulic power?
Force of water on the river bed that remove materials.
What’s abrasion?
Materials rub against and wear away the bed of the river.
What’s attrition?
Loads in river bumps into itself and breaks into smaller rocks.
What’s corrosion?
Acidic water dissolves certain types of rocks.
What is Transportation?
Way in which a river carries the materials.
List 4 types of Transportation!
- Traction
- Saltation
- Suspension
- Solution
What’s Traction?
Large rocks roll along the river bed.
What’s saltation?
Small pebbles bounced along the river bed.
What’s suspension?
Finer sand and silt particles carried in the flow!
What is Deposition
When waters flows slowly, there are not enough energy to carry the sediment, therefore sediment will settle.
