Characterised by the arrangements, activities + impacts on ppl
Why Do Geographers study land use?
- Developing knowledge + the process of change
- identifying trends to enable more effective planning, monitoring changes
- identifying areas of potential heritage loss
- evaluating the impact of change on ppl + environments
Reasons for Land Use Change - Social
- expansion of housing to provide for local employment
- society’s need and values may change- House + car ownership after WW2 now there is a renewal of pop growth in inner urban areas (apartments + public transport)
Reasons for land use change - Historic
- evident when past actions have influenced present characteristics t/f land use is a product of past decisions
- govs may change historical uses b/c there is a need to make more appropriate to today’s needs
- Land is conserved for local ppl + visitors due to its historic significance
Reasons for land use change - Economic
- Creation of wealth, production + spending of money, employment, income, profit, prod of goods + services = major influence to land use change
- Land use is driven by desire to make a profit
Reasons for Land use change =Environmental
- Natural enviro may prohibit some land uses
- Environment now a major consideration in determining land use
- Urban growth curtailed by lack of water
Reasons for land use change - Political
- Can protect an existing land use through granting permission
- Gov policies, legislation, planning, regulations, permission, election promises, protest activities= determine land use change
- Whether or not politicians want the chance
Reasons for land use change - Technology
- Can impact transport
- Can improve access to particular areas
Infill
the use of land withing a built up area for further construction
Greenfield
land development of undeveloped conservation of agricultural sites
Brownfield
land development of industrial or contaminated sites
Greyfield
smaller scale cumulative infill development in residential areas where the building stock is near or ending its physical life and land values make redevelopment attractive.
Urban renewal
land redevelopment and revitalisation of an existing urban area, often in the from of higher density mixed use development
