What was the Wave Hill Cattle Walk Off?
Vincent Lingiari led 200 people on strike for 9 years.
“Treated like dogs…land belonging to me”.
What was the Wave Hill Land Rights?
Whitlam government returned 3000km2 of the Northern Territory to the Gurindiji People.
Gough poured a handful of red soil into Lingiari’s hand to symbolize the legal transfer.
“Residential and cultural purposes and to pasture stock.”
What was the Bark Petition in 1963?
Yolngu people object to the removal of more than 300 km2 of land from Arnhem land (largest Aboriginal land in Northern Territory).
Did the supreme court pass the Bark Petition?
The Bark Petition was not passed in Supreme Court as it would defer Terra Nullius (the decision was made off legal justification).
What was the Tent Embassy?
Was established opposite Parliament House in Canberra. Response to the government’s refusal to recognize the Indigenous peoples’ rights.
What was the Land Rights Act of 1976?
Passed by Fraser Coalition Government. 50% of the land in the Northern Territory was transferred to Indigenous ownership.
What happened in Uluru in 1985?
Handed back to Anangu people with joint ownership. Honored by prohibiting people to walk on it.
What was the Mabo Decision in 1992?
High Court of Australia overturned ‘Terra Nullius’ (precedent).

What was the Native Title Act in 1993?
Turned the Mabo Decision into a law on the basis of proof of living on land previously which can be seen through rock art dreamtime stories, and physical artefacts.
What was the Ten Point Plan created by the Howard Government in 1997?
Makes it harder to claim native title by giving IA a limit of 6 years to prove their case and limiting them to one attempt at placing a claim.
