USA influence to the 1961 Freedom Rides.
The USA Freedom Rides in 1961 were inspired by Martin Luther King’s direct action, and encouraged his followers to peacefully break the Jim Crow laws (segregation of white and colored individuals).

- Influenced by similar events in USA.
- Charles Perkin influenced and spearheaded the Australian Freedom Rides.

Who advertised the Australian Freedom Rides?
Walgett and Moree created awareness and publicity through the media, by highlighting the brutality and the reality of these events towards Indigenous individuals and those who stood up for them.

- 1967 Referendum.

Changed sections 51 & 127 of the Constitution.

- They received 10000 signatures after 10 years of campaigning to change the constitution.
- 90.7% voted YES.
What did the 1975 Racial Discrimination Act do?
Illegalized racial discrimination.
