Outline the spectrum of activity of clindamycin
1) Bacteriostatic- Binds to ribosomes , inhibits cell wall protein synthesis
2) Gram-positive cocci and also anaerobes (Bacteroides fragilis)
3) is well concentrated in bone and excreted in bile and urine
What indications is clindamycin used for?
1) Staphylococcal joint & bone infections
2) Intra-abdominal sepsis
3) Cellulitis
4) Skin & soft tissue infections
What are the side effects associated with the use of clindamycin?
1) Antibiotic-associated colitis
2) Jaundice

what are the monitoring requirements for clindamycin?
Hepatic & renal function - in infants and in longer than 10 days treatment
Who should clindamycin be used in caution with?
1) Existing diarrhoea
2) Colitis more common in middle aged & elderly women, post-op
3) avoid in acute porphyrias
what patient and carer advice should be given to those taking clindamycin?
Patients and their carers should be advised to discontinue and contact a doctor immediately if severe, prolonged or bloody diarrhoea develop
