Lamarck & Darwin Flashcards
0
Q
What was lamarck’s theory?
A
- Individual organisms can change over their lifetime to become better adapted to their environment
- They lose characteristics they don’t use and develop those that are
- Organisms pass these to offspring
- Over generations causes evolution
1
Q
What were lamarck’s observations?
A
- Many organisms are well adapted to their environment
- Individuals can develop useful characteristics due to ‘inner need’
- Characteristics can then be passed on from one generation to the next
2
Q
What was Darwin’s theory based on?
A
3 facts and 2 conclusions
3
Q
Fact 1:
A
All organisms over-reproduce
4
Q
Fact 2:
A
Despite over-reproduction the number of organisms of each species remains stable as a result of competition for resources
5
Q
Conclusion 1:
A
Continuous competition between individuals for environmental resources creates a ‘struggle for existence’
6
Q
Fact 3:
A
There is variation of detail between the members of a species
7
Q
Conclusion 2:
A
Some individuals with particular variations will be more suited to survive and reproduce
