Classification Flashcards
How does biochemical help in classification?
Looks at the similarities in proteins and DNA - the more closely related organisms will have more similar molecules
What are the 5 types of classification?
Biochemical Anatomical Embryological Immunological Behavioural
How to test biochemical?
DNA hybridisation
How does DNA hybridisation work?
DNA taken from 2 different species
Strands mixed together
Pair up with complementary strands
The GREATER THE DEGREE of hybridisation the more similar they are: more heat needed to separate the DNA strands = more matches there are = more closely related
How does anatomical work?
More similarities in structure and function of different bldg parts
How does Embryological work?
Similarities in the early stages of an organism’s development
- evidence that they have evolved from a common ancestor
How does immunological work?
Similarities in the immune system, e.g. Antibodies and antigens
How does behavioural work?
The behaviour of organisms, e.g.humans are classified as primates: increased dependency period, social groups, vocalisation & facial expressions
