11 lakes, from E to W: Otisco, Skaneateles, Owasco, Cayuga (longest-38 mi), Seneca (largest y deepest 618 ft), Keuka, Canandaigua, Honeoye, Canadice, Hemlock, Conesus
Kraken Mare
Largest known body of liquid on the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan - Discovered by Cassini probe in 2008 - About 400,000 km² in area, nearly the size of the Caspian Sea - Filled with liquid hydrocarbons (mainly liquid methane)
Lake Constance (Bodensee)
Lake at N foot of the Alps, N of Switzerland, S of Bavaria, W of Austria - Rhine River flows into y out of it - 63km long x 14km wide x 90m deep - Consists of 3 bodies of water: the Obersee (“upper lake”), Untersee (“lower lake”), and a connecting stretch of the Rhine (the Seerhein)
Lake Geneva (Lac Leman / Genfersee)
Lake on N side of Alps, E of central France, W of Switzerland - Rhone River flows into and out of it - 73km long x 14km wide x 154m deep - Cities of Geneva, Montreaux, Evian; and the Chateau de Chillon are on the shore

Brackish estuary in SE Louisiana just N of New Orleans - Area 630 sq mi, avg depth 13 ft - 40 mi E to W, 24 mi N to S - Levees around the lake broke during Hurricane Katrina, flooding 80% of New Orleans
Lake Powell
Man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, on the border between southern Utah y northern Arizona - Created by Glen Canyon Dam - 2nd largest reservoir in USA by max capacity, after Lake Mead - 186mi long x 25mi wide x 130 ft deep - Specific amount of water is released anually to flow downstream to Lake Mead
Lake St. Clair
Lake lying between W Ontario y E Michigan - Part of Great Lakes system: St. Clair River flows from Lk Huron south into Lk St Clair, Detroit River flows out SW into Lk Erie - Thames River (Ontario) also flows in from SE - 26mi long X 24 mi wide X 11 ft deep
Lake Tanganyika
African great lake, W of Tanzania, S of Burundi, E of DR Congo, N of Zambia - Longest freshwater lake; 2nd largest freshwater by volume y 2nd deepest (both Lake Baikal); Largest lake entirely in Southern Hemisphere (part of Lk Victoria is north of Equator) - Flows into Congo River system, then to Atlantic - 673km long x 72km wide x 570m deep - Bujumbura is on N shore
Lake Texcoco
Former lake in Valley of Mexico - Aztec city of Tenochtitlan built on an island in the lake - Drained for flood control, y Mexico City takes up all of former lakebed - Was an endorheic system of five interconnected lakes
Lake Titicaca
Largest lake in S. America - Located in the Andes, 3800m above sea level, on the border of Bolivia and Peru - 190km long x 80km wide x 107m deep - Highest lake in the world navigable by large boats
Lake Victoria (Nam Lolwe/Nalubaale/Nyanza)
Africa’s largest lake by area, world’s largest tropical lake, largest in Southern Hemisphere, y world’s 2nd largest freshwater lake by surface area (after Superior) - One of the African Great Lakes - 337km long x 250 km wide x 40m deep - On the borders of Kenya, Tanzania, y Uganda (Kampala is on the shore) - Only outflow is the White Nile
Lake Vostok
Largest lake in Antarctica - Subglacial freshwater lake, 4000 m under surface of ice below Vostok station - Area 12500 sq km, avg depth 432 m - 250 km long by 50 km wide - Drilling during 2013-15 collected ice cores y water samples
Loch Lomond
Freshwater loch in W Scotland, NW of Glasgow - Largest inland water in Britain by surface area - 24 mi long x 5 mi wide x 121 ft deep - Many islands, including Inchmurrin, largest freshwater island in UK - Featured in Scottish folk song “The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond” (“o ye’ll tak’ the high road, and I’ll tak’ the low road”)
Lough Neagh
Freshwater lake in Northern Ireland - Largest lake by area in the British Isles - 19mi long x 9mi wide x 30 ft deep - Name means Lake of Eachaidh (a powerful early Irish god, aka The Dagda) - Pronounced “Lock Nay”
Salton Sea
Shallow, saline, endorheic lake in Southern CA’s Imperial y Coachella Valleys - Colorado River flowed sporadically into the area, variously creating a lake or a dry basin - Most recent fill was accidentally done in 1905 during Colorado River canal construction work - Largest lake in CA, 343 sq mi in surface area - Sits 71m below sea level
