- Instead of having a close, maternal relationship with her daughter their relationship is tense and formal- this could highlight the differences between the two characters

- mother not expected to care for or have a large role in raising their children- instead, they would employ a nurse
- reflected in her character when she acts coldly towards her daughter
- fourteen when she gave birth to Juliet- could be why she pressures Juliet into marrying Paris

- Self-Centred - instead of listening to Juilet’s concerns about marrying Paris, she focuses on how the marriage will help the family’s image.
- Unloving - appears to neglect her daughter’s feelings and refuses to love her in a maternal sense.
- Materialistic - concerned with the material gain she will obtain once Juliet has married Paris. She values her status over Juilet’s happiness. She only forgives her daughter when Juilet decides to marry Paris to appease her and her father.

- Her mother was married at Juliet’s age- Juliet doesn’t even think about marriage- which presents her as more independent- however, she does become infatuated with a man which could show he trying to be like her mother but instead of family, its loves
