inflammation of breast tissue
Causes
Obstruction in the ducts and accumulation of milk during breast feeding
Infection
What is the most common causative organism
Staph aureus
How does it present
Breast pain - unilateral
Erythema
Local warmth
Nipple discharge
Fever
What is the management?
If caused by duct blockage:
- conservative
- continue breastfeeding, expressing and breast massage
If infection:
Antibiotics
Fluconazole
What are abx used
Flucloxaccilin
Erythromycin if allergic
what is a complication of mastitis
breast abscess
When can a candidal infection of the nipple occur
After a course of antibiotics
What usually causes recurrent mastitis
Candidal infection
How does candida infection of the nipple present?
Sore nipples bilaterally
Nipple tenderness and itching
Cracked, flaky or shiny areola
Sx in baby - nappy rash, white patches in mouth
What is treatment of candida of the nipple
Topical miconazole 2% after each breastfeed
PO miconazole gel or nystatin for baby
