Why did MTV describe ‘Jealous’ as a heartbreaking ballad?
Because of the way the instumentation (piano, synth strings, backing vocals and haunting main vocals), key signature and rubato moderato tempo.

The intro comprises only of piano - the right-hand makes use of acciacaturas while the left hand uses a bare 5th chords in consecutive 5ths motion

The verse is dividied into equal two bar melodic shapes, containing an interval of a major 6th, and often using a downwards falling profile. The accompaniement is a contiunation of that of the intro, although it is developed gradually, including the introduction of backing vocals and subtle strings

Four bar chord pattern - I, vi, ii, V7 in Db Major. The upward resolving appoggiatura on C and Db initially produces a sharpened 4th over the chord of Gb Major then a sus2 over Bb Minor. These help to emphasise and bring out the anguished and melancholy meaning of the lyrics
