Q

Describe how the harmony is adventurous in HBFS

A

In the intro, D and D# are in the treble and bass respectively, creating a dischord. Second inversion and extended chords are used during the verse. The pedal on B with F#7sus4 chords played over the top create a sense of harmonic ambiguity. In the break of the instrumental bridge the C natural acts as a blue note which, combined with the A, F# and D# of the instrumental chords, suggests a passing diminished 7th chord

How is the structure of HBFS unusual?

A

There is no conventional verse-chorus form, instead the main 8-bar idea is presented in an increasingly developed way, with the fifth repetition moving to vocal quavers which then extends into an instrumental bridge section
