What are the successes of the labour reforms
1946 NI act - benefits for sickness maternity widows and unemp, death grant given to help with funeral costs, 26 s per week
1946 industrial injuries act - higher rate of benefit than someone who just lose their job
1948 national assistance board - provided help to needy which wasn’t covered in NI act, provided money for clothing and bedding
1946 new towns act - reduce overcrowding in cities, 12 commute cities
1947 country and town planning act - increased council powers buying land and planning for redevelopment
1949 new housing act - gov gave LAs 75% for improvement cost
1946 NHS act - agreed that doctors could continue having private clients and have public clients, added bonus
1944 education act - fees for local authority school - abolished
Nationalisation- keeps unemp low under 2.5%
What are the limitations of the labour reforms
1946 NHS act - health contributions only paid for 10% of funding, had to raise taxes, 1951 had to introduce prescription charges
Everyone who was working had to contribute to national insurance, national assistance board and industrial injuries act
11+ exam more suited MC children whose parents could coach them for it, post war baby boom at gov spending had to go to primary schools
Squatting became reality for some people when it came to housing, shortage of materials and labour, bevan minister for health and squalor one had to fail
