They lost because they also had a shortage of hand grenades which was their most valued weapon, as it was very effective.

What was the greatest mistake the British made in this battle
They made the assumption that their bombardment would have a massive effect. It even affected their men and it took a while to cut through. It would slow them down and would have less of an impact on enemy defences.
