What initiates labour?
Increased cervical pressure causes uterine lining to release prostaglandins
What do the prostaglandins do?
Enhance action of oxytocin
What causes an increase in the no. of oxytocin receptors in the myometrium & uterine lining?
Placental hormones
What are Braxton-Hicks contractions?
Infrequent practice contractions.
Aid body in preparation for birth
What are the layers of the uterus?
Endometrium
Myometrium
Serosa
What is cervical ripening? When does it occur?
Growth & remodelling of cervix prior to labour
What causes cervical ripening?
Placental hormones & relaxin
What is labour?
Painful uterine contractions
Dilatation of cervix
What are the 3 mechanical factors in labour?
Powers (uterus)
Passenger (foetal head)
Passage (pelvis & soft tissues)
3 stages of labour?
- From start of contractions to 10cm dilatation of cervix
- Full dilatation to delivery
- Delivery of baby to delivery of placenta
What are the 2 hormones involved in initiating labour?
Prostaglandin PGF2-a
Oxytocin
