Development of gametes Flashcards
What is oogenesis?
Development of ovum
What is spermatogenesis?
Development of spermatozoa from male primordial germ cells
What is spermiogenesis?
The final stage of spermatogenesis where spermatids mature into mature, motile spermatozoa
What is a diploid cell?
A cell with two complete sets of chromosomes, a normal body cell
What is a haploid cell?
A cell with one complete set of chromosomes, sperm and ova
How is a haploid cell formed?
When a diploid cell undergoes meiosis
What is mitosis?
When a diploid cell divides to give rise to 2 identical diploid cells
What is meiosis?
When a diploid germ cell divides to give rise to 4 non-identical haploid cells
What is a germ cell?
Any cell that gives rise to gametes
What 2 steps are involved in meiosis?
Meiosis 1 & Meiosis 2
When does spermatogenesis begin?
At puberty
Describe the timings of oogenesis.
In early foetal development - germ cells undergo mitosis to form primary oocytes
This pauses at birth
At menarche a few eggs undergo secondary meiosis every month
What is the sperm called at each stage of spermatogenesis? And are they diploid (D) or haploid (H) at each stage?
Germ cell (D) Spermatogonium (D) Primary spermatocyte (D) Secondary spermatocyte (H) Spermatids (H) Sperm cells (H)
What is the egg called at each stage of oogenesis? And are they diploid (D) or haploid (H) at each stage?
Germ cell (D) Oogonium (D) Primary oocyte (D) Secondary oocyte (H) Ootid (H) Ovum (H)
Draw out spermatogenesis and oogenesis.
