Labour Flashcards
how do we know someone is in labour?
painful regular contractions
cervical changes
+/- rupture of membranes
how do we check that this is liquor?
pH
ferning on a slide
nitralazine blue test
what are we looking for when we assess cervical changes ?
position
dilation
effacement
consistency
head of fetus
what are 3 causes of dystocia?
power: inadequate contractions
Passenger: size of baby, position of the baby head
passage: cephalopelvic disproportion
what is in the biophysical profile?
tone
movement
breathing
liquour volume
what is a normal fetal pH
> 7.25, done by Fetal blood sample (scalp)
if fetal blood pH is less than … you need to deliver the baby within 30 mins
7
babies drop pH by …. every minute during labour to prep for hypoxia
0.04
what is a CTG ?
cardiotocogram
assess fetal heart rate and maternal contractions
when analyzing a CTG what are we looking for?
- baseline rate (want 110-160)
- beat to beat variability (5-25)
- access/decels)
- relationship of decals to contractions
what do we do if there are late decels on CTG?
late decels are associated with fetal hypoxia - do fetal blood sampling
define fetal bradycardia? what are some causes
fetal HR <100 for > 5 mins
cord prolapse
placental abruption
uterine rupture
what is a cause of fetal tachycardia ?
fetal infection
