Power or Weakness of Laborers
They were paid very little and factory employment provided new opportunities for children and adults. Child labor was excessive.
Immigration in this Period
About 800,000 immigrants came to America in 1920-1921. Isolationists in America had little use for immigrants and they didn’t really like the new immigrants. They came from Southern and Eastern Europe. They created the Immigration Act of 1924 which cut 2% of each nationality from come to America, purpose was to freeze ethnic communities. Canadians and Latin’s were exempt from this. Immigration decreased.
Immigration Restrictions
They created the Immigration Act of 1924 which cut 2% of each nationality of immigrants from coming to America. The purpose of these acts was to freeze American existing ethnic composition. Canadians and Latin’s were exempt from the quota system. Marked the end of unrestricted immigration.
Red Scare
Occurred in 1919, and it was a nationwide fear of communists, anarchists, and other dissidents. There were s dries of anarchists bombings. A. Mitchell Palmer was known for rounding up many suspects. A series of strikes occurred as well which increased the fear of communism.
Palmer Raids
Were a series of raids by the U.S. Department of Justice. It was intended to capture, arrest, and deport people who were suspects, especially anarchists. They were led by A. Mitchell Palmer who was famous for rounding up many suspects, he was known as the “Fighting Quaker.”
Sacco and Vanzetti
The are known anarchists. They were convicted in 1921 of the murder of a Massachusetts pay,aster and his guard. The jury and judge were prejudiced against the defendants because they were Italian, atheists, anarchists, and draft dodgers. The case dragged for 6 years, then were electrocuted to death.
Wagner Act
It created a powerful new National Labor Relations Board and reasserted the right of labor to engage in self organization and to bargain collectively through representatives choices. Gave basic rights of private sector employees to organize into trade union, engage in collective bargaining, and contains at work.
Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO)
Was created by John L. Lewis and leaders of 7 other unions. It was to organize unskilled workers into effective unions. There goal was to organize Americas industrial workers in mass productions.
Working Conditions
Working conditions of laborers did improve as technology improve which provided safety conditions and set wages and hours. But employment began to decrease since businesses couldn’t pay their workers anymore.
