Farmers Flashcards
Dust Bowl
A period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology no agriculture. Severe drought and failure to apply dry-land farming methods to prevent wind erosion. It came in three waves. Farmers conducted extensive deep plowing of the virgin topsoil.
New Deal
It was created in 1933. Also known as the Agricultural Adjustment Act that allowed farmers to grow less crops for fewer people. $100 million were paid to farmers to put their crops down. Gave canned meat to people that were jobless.
Farming During Great Depression
The crops were lowered when the stock market crashed. They band together like a labor union and threatened to not give milk to cities.
Agricultural Marketing Act of 1929
It attempted to stop the downward spiral of crop prices. It was sponsored by Hoover.
1920s Problems of Overproduction
During WWI, Britain and France needed food on a regular basis. When Germans sank the ships filled with merchants food supplies became more important. But after the war countries didn’t need U.S. farming as much since they were able to farm on there own now. Food was being overproduced which caused there to be to much food on the market and made it difficult for farmers to sell. Large surpluses were causing the prices to drop which caused farmers to be in debt. Rural poverty was widespread and Congress tried relief but it didn’t work.
