Lemert - societal reaction - primary: not public ally labelled not “deviant” - secondary: labelled as “deviant” becomes master status (stigmatisation)

SFP- living up to a label - master status > joined subcultures. young= hippy marijuana drug use become master status due to to societal reaction

Media exaggeration - moral panic - crackdown - stigmatisation - SFP master status
Criticisms
Deterministic - no free well. - offender as victim. Fails to explain deviance before labelling
