Globalisation
Shrinking of the world > media, communication, travel. Examples: sex trafficking, sex tourism, drug trade, cyber crimes.
TNC’s growing
Supply and demand - north need so south supply. E.G. Columbian cocaine trade - 20% of population rely on drug trade
Green crime
Crimes against the environment , primary: direct harm against the environment - deforestation. Secondary: crimes that go against set environmental laws - e.g. Toxic waste dumping. Case study: Bhopal - 3000 ppl died dud ego gas leak, first a massive explosion and then it conatminated the water
Evaluations of green crimes
+ recognises importance of the environment, and need to address harms and risk of damage to environment. - hard to define boundaries - subjective not objective
State crimes
Crimes commits by or on behalf of the state - e.g. Guantanamo bay, holocaust, genocide. Cn commit large scale and have no consequences, hard to challenge as is the law
Culture of denial
Cohen - states conceal their crime or try to legitimate them. 3 stages: 1. It didn’t happen 2. It’s something else ( even with evidence) 3. It had to be done - eg national security
Neutralisation theory
Denial of victim, denial of injury and denial of responsibility. Condemns the condemer
