Labelling A Cell Flashcards
What is a cell wall?
A rigid but porous structure made up of cellulose. It provides support for the cell and protection from physical injury.
What is a cell membrane?
A flexible double-layered membrane surrounding the cell. It provides support and allows some substances to enter and keeps others out.
What is cytoplasm?
A mostly water substance that suspends the organelles and stores other substances until needed. Many chemical reactions occur and turn cytoplasm from jelly-like to liquid, allowing organelles to move around.
What is a nucleus?
A roughly spherical structure within the cell. It contains genetic information that regulates all cell activities.
What is a mitochondrion?
The “power plant” of the cell. It makes energy using cellular respiration: requires oxygen and sugar, and produces carbon dioxide, water and usable energy.
What is chloroplast?
Absorbs the light energy and uses it in photosynthesis, where it converts carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight into glucose and oxygen.
What is a vacuole?
A single layer of membrane enclosing the fluid in a sac. It contains some substances, removes others, and maintains internal fluid (turgor) pressure.
