Circulatory System Flashcards
What are blood vessels?
A network of tubes that carry blood.
What are veins?
Thinned walled muscular tubes that carry blood back to the heart. They have one way valves to prevent blood back flow.
What are arteries?
Thick walled muscular tubes that carry blood away from the heart. Walls are thick to withstand the pressure of blood from the heart.
What are capillaries?
Tiny tubes that cover all cells of the body. Walls of the tubes are one cell thick to enable quick diffusion of oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and waste.
What is blood?
A connective tissue circulating through the body “connecting” all parts.
What is the job of white blood cells?
WBC fight infections by recognizing and destroying bacteria and viruses.
What is the job of red blood cells?
RBC contain a protein hemoglobin which attracts oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules. They transport oxygen to cells and take carbon dioxide away from the cells.
What is the job of platelets?
Platelets help blood to clot when blood vessels re damaged.
What is the function and structure of the heart?
The hearts job is to pump blood around the body. Nerve cells (pace maker cells) send an electrical signal to contract heart. The heart has four chambers, and the heart beat depends on the oxygen needed by the body.
The purpose of the circulatory pathway is to transport _____ and _____ through the body, carry away waste, and is made up of blood, the heart, and blood vessels.
Oxygen, nutrients
The right side of the heart pumps blood into a(n) _____
Artery
Arteries get smaller and smaller until they are _____ covering alveoli in the lungs where _____ of gases occur (___ in, ___ out).
Capillaries, diffusion.
Oxygen in, carbon dioxide out.
Capillaries combine to become a _____ leading back to the the left side of the heart. Pumping into a(n) _____.
Vein, artery.
The heart pumps oxygen rich blood into arteries, then branches into _____ covering body cells.
Capillaries
In capillaries, _____ and _____ diffuse into cells, carbon dioxide and other wastes come out.
Oxygen and nutrients.
