Labelling Flashcards
what is Labelling?
labelling refers to the process where teachers assign a specific identity or expectation to students based on perceived characteristics such as behaviour, appearance or background.
What did Dunne and Gazlay suggest?
Dunne and Glazeley found that in primary schools, teachers often have lower expectations for working class students, associating them with bad behaviour. As a result of this they received less encouragement
What did Rist suggest?
Rist studied labels in secondary schools and found that students were sorted into groups by socio-economic status, Middle class students were placed in higher classes whereas the working class students were placed in lower classes.
What is the impact of labelling?
The impact of labelling affects students educational outcomes by reinforcing teacher expectations, which can create a self fulfilling prophecy.
What did Becker suggest?
Becker argued that teachers have a concept of the ideal pupil typically a middle class student who is well behaved and is motivated when students do not meet these expectations they often receive negative labels
What did Hempel-Jorgenson suggest?
students who were labelled as problematic were often excluded from meaningful classroom interactions. negatively labelled students often were given less attention as they was viewed as hard to teach.
What is the evaluation of labelling?
oversimplified, ignores external factors such as parental influence
-deterministic, once a label is applied the student will internalize these labels yet students have the free will to reject these labels
