Lab Values Flashcards
What are the two types of sodium imbalances
HYPERNATREMIA: >145mmol/L
HYPONATREMIA: < 135mmol/L
Normal sodium levels
136 - 145mmol/L
Risk factors of sodium imbalance
Increased or decreased sodium intake
Loss of fluids & increased sodium excretion (diarrhoea, vomit, diaphoresis)
Decreased sodium excretion due to kidney problems
Treatment for Hypernatremia due to hypovolaemia (water deficit) ?
IV Sodium Chloride 0.9% infusions
Treatment for hyponatremia resulting from hypervolaemia (excess fluid) ?
Loop diuretics
Water intake restrictions
The two types of potassium imbalance ?
HYPERKALEMIA: > 5.5mmol/L
HYPOKALEMKA: < 3.5mmol/L
What is a normal potassium Level?
3.5 - 5.5 mol/L
Major sign and symptom of potassium imbalance
Cardiac Dysrhythmias - ECG CHANGES
Potassium and sodium are opposites, so a high Na indicates ..
Low K+
What are the two types of calcium imbalance
HYPERCALCEMIA: > 11 mol/L
HYPOCALCEMIA: < 9 mmol/L
Two types of magnesium imbalance ?
HYPERMAGNESEMIA: > 2.5 mmol/L
HYPOMAGNESEMIA: < 1.5 mmol/L
Symptoms of HYPERMAGNESEMIA?
LOW EVERYTHING (SEDATED)
Low energy (drowsiness, coma)
Low HR, RR and BP
Shallow respirations
Little Bowel sounds
Symptoms of HYPOMAGNESEMIA?
HIGH EVERYTHING
high HR, BP
Increased tendon reflex
Shallow respiration’s
Twitching
Irritability and confusion
What does ABG show?
arterial blood gas measure the balance of oxygen and co2 in blood to study lung functioning.
It contains: arterial blood pH, PaCO2, HCO3, SaO2
Normal values in ABG
Arterial blood pH: 7.35 - 7.45
PaCO2 acid (partial pressure of Co2 in arterial blood) - 35 - 45 mmHg
HCO3 basic (bicarbonate) - 21 - 28 mmol/L
SaO2 (oxygen sat) - 95-100%
PaO2 (partial pressure O2 in arterial blood) - 80 - 100 mmHg
