Difference between colonisation and infection
Colonisation: infectious agent is present without causing infection/disease
Infection: infectious agent has entered and multiplied inside body, may be symptomatic

Standard precaution
- Hand hygiene
- PPE
- respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
- aseptic technique
- safe use and disposal of sharps
- routine environment cleaning
- reprocess reusable equipment
- waste management
- appropriate handling of linen
Donning PPE
- Hand hygiene
- Put on gown
- Put on mask
- Put on protective eye wear
- Perform hand hygiene then gloves
Doffing PEE
- Remove gloves + hand hygiene
- Remove apron + hand hygiene
- Remove eye protection + hand hygiene
- Remove mask + hand hygiene
Cleaning surface contaminated with blood or body fluids
Initial clean with neutral detergent and water
Then with disinfectant solution.
Contact precautions
Suspected transmission via direct or indirect contact (shingles, infectious skin infections! Scabies and mites)
Droplet precaution
Suspected transmission risk of infectious agent via respiratory droplet (parainfluenza, mumps, pertussis, meningococcal)
- single patient room
- surgical mask, gloves and protective eyewear
Airborne precautions
Suspected Transmission of infectious agent via airborne (measles, chickenpox, tb)
- pt in negative pressure room
- fitted N95 mask
