Lab Safety and Microscopes Flashcards
What are the potential hazard(s) to people when working with blood/urine/feces in veterinary clinics?
Bacteria
Viruses
Parasites
How long should you flush your eyes if chemicals or biohazards are splashed into them?
At least 15 minutes
Zoonoses
A disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
What magnification level should you start when using a microscope?
The lowest
What is included in PPE?
Gloves
Gown (lab coat)
Masks
Eye gear
Infectious disease
Those that can be transmitted to a person, due to bacteria, viruses, parasites or other agents, which may invade a person’s body, possibly resulting in an infection
OSHA meaning
-Occupational Safety and Health Administration
-Help employers and employees reduce on the job injuries and deaths
What is included when labeling a sample?
Time, date, patient name, & your initials
Magnification
The ratio of the size of a feature in an image (D) to the size of the feature in the actual object (d)
M= D/d
Modern Microscopes “compound microscopes”
They magnify both in the objective and the ocular.
Magnification = Ocular x Objective
400x = 10 x 40
Microscope use
- Begin with the condenser up & the lowest magnification.
- Adjust focus with the course knob, centering the object of interest.
- Increase magnification as needed, using only fine focus at higher magnification.
- Oil is used for the 1000x magnification, be careful to keep oil off all other lenses.
- As magnification is increased, the light will need to be increased.
- Adjust contrast with the iris diaphragm.
