14
Q

Determining Packed Cell Volume

A
  1. Blood is placed in hematocrit tube & sealed with clay.
  2. Sample is spun in hematocrit centrifuge for 3-5 minutes.
  3. Spun sample is aligned on reader card and the top of the red cell layer is read
    as PCV.

15
Q

What does PCV indicate?

A

In dogs, normal PCV is 37-55%

-Below 37% indicates anemia
-Above 55% indicates dehydration or abnormal production

Q

Clinic Chemistry gives results such as…

A

-Cellular damage (ALT, CK, K+)
-Exposure to specific infectious diseases (FeLV, Lyme)
-Hydration status (BUN, Na+, Cr)
-Organ function (Cr, Bile acids, pO2)
-Hormone production

17
Q

Quality Assurance: Accuracy & Precision

A

A measurement is determined valid if it is both accurate & precise

18
Q

Precision

A

is reproducibility of results

19
Q

Accuracy

A

is closeness to actual value

21
Q

Green tube

A

-Plasma evaluation
-PST
-Genetics, renin, aldosterone, chemistry

22
Q

Lavender tube

A

-Hematology
-Contains EDTA, an anti-clotting agent
-Commonly used for BD screening and immunohematology testing

23
Q

Total Protein
Amount of protein contained in serum sample, includes…

A

-Albumin
-Globulins (antibodies)
-Hormones
-Enzymes

24
Q

TP evaluations indicate…

A

may indicate dehydration or abnormal production of antibodies

25

A

may indicate liver failure or excessive loss from kidneys or intestines

26
Q

What does plasma contain?

A

-Water
-Lipids
-Proteins
-Sugars
-Electrolytes
